According to Article 680.12 a D/S for a hot tub needs to be readily accessible and within sight of the unit. Is there still a 5 foot rule for a residential tub? The 2005 Handbook shows a 5 foot rule but the NEC does not state 5 feet, except for a shutoff for commercial hot tubs???

For a non-dwelling hot tub, the disco is to be installed not less than 5' & not more than 50' & within sight. For a dwelling hot tub, I believe it's just within sight. Which includes not more than 50'.

Are you referring to a hydromassage tub in a bathroom or a spa or "jacuzzi" type hot tub, not in a bathroom?
If it is a hydromassage tub you need to see 680.70.
There are fewer requirements for the bathroom version as this is drained after each use.

It also depends if it is inside or outside but 680.41 does not apply to single family dwellings. If the question is, can a disconnect switch be closer than 5' ? I think it can if it is a disconnect associated with the hot tub, inside location , single family , wall switches not associated with the spa or hot tub need to be 5' away.

680.12 readily accessible and in sight

We install several Hot Tubs a month. The supplier provides a small load center with two 2pole GFCI breakers already installed. 20 and 30 amp. We run power to the load center (to use as a disco) and run 12's and 10's to the tub.

680.42 (A)(1) says that my liquidtight cannot be more than 6' long, so my loadcenter's location is usually determined by where the 6' falls.

It is outside and it is residential....

I don't really see a restirction , the closest thing would be 680.10 .I have always placed them 5' or more at a single family resi,..but I guess I did not have to.
