I went to a job today where the dedicated receptacle for a hot tub was 6" from the hot tub. I installed LFNMC from the outlet box that was 6" from the tub to a new box that I set at 5' from the tub. I blanked off the box that is still 6" from the tub and it now feeds my new box that is 5' away. My question is this - is this blanked off box still in violation of the NEC scince it is within 5' of the tub? TY.

You did just fine

Great. The HO was asking me a hudred questions when I was done and had me doubting myself. He told me that the inspector wanted the entire box moved 5' away, but I told him a junction box could be within 5' of the tub, just no switches or receptacles.

how long is your flex?

680.42 Outdoor Installations.
A spa or hot tub installed outdoors shall comply with the provisions of Parts I and II of this article, except as permitted in 680.42(A) and (B), that would otherwise apply to pools installed outdoors.
(A) Flexible Connections. Listed packaged spa or hot tub equipment assemblies or self-contained spas or hot tubs utilizing a factory-installed or assembled control panel or panelboard shall be permitted to use flexible connections as covered in 680.42(A)(1) and (A)(2):
(1) Flexible Conduit. Liquidtight flexible metal conduit or liquidtight flexible nonmetallic conduit shall be permitted in lengths of not more than 1.8 m (6 ft).

The LFNMC is 9'. I know of the 6' limitation. I dont understand it. I guess if the inspector says anything I can just set a j-box between my 9' peice.

Type "B" has no footage limitations

680.42 does not specify type. IMO even type B would still have to be less than 6'.

I agree with GG and do not understand the length restriction.

GG, could you use sch 80 PVC then change over?

680.42(A)(1) Flexible Conduit
Liquidtight flexible metal conduit or liquidtight flexible nonmetallic conduit shall be permitted in lengths of not more than 1.8 m (6 ft).

I learned something today. The next question is Why doesn't this 6' requirement apply to inground pools???

The 6' LFNC rule would not apply to a service receptacle provided for maintenance on the outdoor tub, would it?

Edit to add:

After re-reading the original question, I don't believe that the 6' rule applies to it: It is a cord & plug connected tub, falling under 680.42(A)(2), not (A)(1). You can wire the house in LFNC-B; the connection of the tub to the premises wiring system is what's being restricted here, IMO, not the wiring on the line side of the outlet.
