Hot Tub

A buddy just asked if I could help him with the hook up of his hot tub. There is a new deck and siding on the house of course. The guy who built the deck left a 3/4 pvc for me, how nice. My concern is the disconnect location. How close and how far it can be from the tub?. The other is bonding and or grounding the tub? I did look at article 680 but I am getting a little lost about things. The tub is 50 Amps and I am in NY on Long Island if that helps. Thanks

Disconnect must be at least 5' from the water and within sight of the tub. Most tubs I've done require a 4 wire connection and have wire terminations within the control box.

Just to add- some tubs are 240v only, and don't require a neutral. However, if you locate the GFCI breaker at the disconnect instead of the panel, the feed to the disconnect will require a neutral for the GFCI to operate.

See NYSRC E4103.3. (accessible, within sight and located not less than 5 ft)

Bonding: at least a #8 (I use a solid #4) ground wire must connect all metal plumbing, metal conduit and metal surfaces within 5', and metal fittings, to the motor and heater lug(s). Also run the ground to the controls, where the 50 Amps is connected.

Add a plug, 120-volt, GFI, with bubble cover, between 5 feet and 10 feet from the edge of the water. No plug within 5 feet. All plugs within 10 feet must be gfi'ed.

Lighting fixtures less than 12' above the water must be gfi'ed. Additional requirements if lights are within 7'6" of water.

Switches must be at least 5' away from water.

Power the hot tub, like the other guys have said, with a 50-amp, gfi protected circuit, the disconnect I think must be 5 feet to 50 feet, and within sight of the hot tub.

Any liquidtight should contain a ground wire.

Use of a disconnect with an exterior handle is a nice touch, but Home Depot sells the ready-made disconnects (that contain a gfi plug and 50 or 60 Amp GFI breaker) which makes for an easy installation.

If you are on the 2008 NEC (you might not be, I don't know), they changed the 5' to 6'.
If it is outside, 680.42 will make you comply with swimming pool clearances (Part II), so receptacles within 20' will be GFCI 680.22(A)(4).

680.26 Is the tough section, for 2008, we need to bond to the water 680.26(C). Haven't figured a good (non-plumbing) way of doing that yet.
