ok just another simple question. A work mate (plumber) asked me what size wire and ocpd to hook up to a hot water heater. i'm thinking ok 10awg and 30amp, then he says 5500w 240
so i calculate 5500/240= 22.92 times 125% and get
28.65, so im in a small quandry. is it still 30 amp breaker or do i use the 80% rule and go 35amp breaker with 8awg wire. thanks for the help.

Re: hot water heater

jim how am i already at 80%? 28amps is more or are do we only have to look at the 22.92amps?
thanks again.

Re: hot water heater

Ok your load of 5500 watts is 22.92 amps. You run 10 -2 and breaker at 30 amps.So your breaker is 125 % and your wire is also 125 % .We dont need to do this twice.30 amps times 240 volts =7200 watts,80% of 7200 =5760 watts. I think it was no accident that the element was rated at 5500 watts

Re: hot water heater

You already added 25% that is all you need to do.

This 5500 watt 240 volt water heater only draws 23 amps not 29 amps.

Re: hot water heater

Ok have to add this if its a hot water heater why heat what is already hot ;)

I agree, but go into a plumbing supply and ask for a cold water heater and see what kind of look you get. :D

Re: hot water heater

Actually my son showed me that we owned a wire stretcher. He pulled one of our vans home using romex.Next morning i looked at the wire and asked him how 12-2 managed to do the job.Answer, dad it was 10-2 when we began

Re: hot water heater

I'm still laughing at jimwalkers response. That sounded like a conversation between my son and me.

Re: hot water heater

I wondering why you have to have a heater for hot water. You did say hot water heater.
Reminds me of another odd saying. "I am going to microwave dinner", but we don't say "I am going to oven dinner", or we don't use a noun as a verb.
Sorry, my mom was an english teacher.

Re: hot water heater

you can say that again a few more times. or as that famous swami yoga berri said, it looks like deja vu all over again.
