Its been sometime since I have designed a hotel. I recall in the past if it was over 5 stories we had to install a generator, and did on a few. I am about to embark on another hotel and all I am finding in the 2018 IBC regards "high-rise" which is not defined by stories but instead height. It defines this as 75' above the level the fire trucks are at. So if the hotel is five stories but under 75' seems like no generator required. But it is sticking in the back of my find some magic about 5 stories that I just cant find. Anybody know the five story requirement and where I can find it? Thanks.

I believe that is five or more stories ABOVE GRADE.
So you could have a six story hotel with no generator if the grade is at the third floor

Our building guys say above 75 ft but I don't know what Code Section they base that upon.
(I believe IBC says > 75 is "high Rise")

The only definition I see for high rise is greater than 75'. Hv&Lv where do you see the 5 stories in code? Thats what I have heard but I cannot find it in code.
