We have a project of hotel guest room. The guest room bathroom uses the 120V exhaust fan light combo. We propose to bring one 120V circuit to the fan. The fan will be controlled by the motion sensor and humidity sensor. We also propose to bring a separate 120V circuit to the light of the fan + light combo from the key card switch circuit for occupancy control. The two 120V circuits are different circuits originated from the electrical panel.

The electrician said this will put 240V in the junction box of the fan + light combo and is NEC code violation. Is this true? Do you know which NEC code section prohibited this? What if we require the two different 120V circuits both originated from the same phase thus no 240V in the junction box? Is this allowed?

Let me know your ideas. Always appreciated!

Does the electrician mean a two pole breaker and plans to make it a multi-wire branch circuit which would be two 120V circuits with a shared neutral? I don't see why that wouldn't be allowed.

Can you clarify the issue with them? It might be the size of the box or the listing of the fan/light?

Thanks for the response! I didn't see the issue either. I will ask them for clarification.

If it is against code I have violated it many times.
I think he is thinking of 277V, that is not allowed in a hotel room but can be out in the hall, if I am remembering correct.
