House panel and garage panel

My question is I already have a 200amp service in my house, would like to have a sub panel out on my garage, i've heard of different ways to do this, but I don't want to have to redue it, I'd rather do it right the first time, I live in the northern part of Indiana, do I have to have a disconnect outside of the bldg. then to the panel inside????

Re: House panel and garage panel

If this is a detached garage, it would be service equipment rather than a subpanel. See 225.30 to 225.40 for requirements. It does not have to be outside although it can be. See 250.32 for grounding requirements. A grounding electrode wil be required if more than one branch circuit is supplied.

John,
A grounding electrode wil be required if more than one branch circuit is supplied.
The wires feeding a panel are feeders and not branch circuit conductors, so any time a panel is installed at a second building, a grounding electrode system is required.

Re: House panel and garage panel

John, it would be treated similar to service equipment if no metallic paths are between the house and garage. If metallic paths exist (most of the time they do exist), if would be treated as a downstream panelboard and a grounding conductor would have to be run. In both cases, a grounding electrode system would have to be established for the grounding conductors. The reason for stating it that way is that the Code doesn't define a subpanel or for that matter a panel. :D

I have a concern for Burner, are you really an electrician? You have asked a fairly fundamental question that most experienced electricians know unless they are just taking up the trade.

I was looking at the exception to 250.32(A) but in this case it does not apply since we are indeed talking about a feeder.
