House panel wiring through several occupancy's

Is there a code requirement regarding the running of a branch circuit from a house panel, throughe several different occoupancys for house lighting around the exterior of the building. I seem to remember a code section that allowed feeders through occupancys, but not branch circuits. Any help is appreciated.

How else are you going to wire common area lighting?

Staying in the wall, in the slab, in the canopy. It's difficult but I thought I remembered a code section that specified feeders only were allowed to pass through multiple occupancys, and not branch circuits.

I would be curious to see that requirement in writing somewhere for a commercial building.
