Had an inspector tell me the other day that according to Code, there has to be at least one 'incandescent screw base socket' in a residential garage ceiling.
He said that this was because fluorescent lights will not ignite properly unless they are cold temp and how does he know what is installed.
This came up in general conversation.
He couldn't recall the Article.

Ty, could this be an inspectors twist on some code, something like the dining room receptacle twist from the other side? :D

Is the word "All" in his conversation?

Its true that some flouresent lamps will not fire when cold, in fact the standard electromagnetic ballast has a tought time below 60 Deg F.
However the newer T-8 with electronic ballasts do just fine down to 20 deg.
The requirement is for a lighting outlet. It does not specify what type of luminaire to use.

It's not the inspector's job to foretell the future! and doesn't he do a final inspection?

Tom: We use the new electronic ballast on the T-12 4' bulbs and they do fine down to -0F

Litetronics has a new 4' RS bulb T-10 that puts out 3700 lumen's initially and 3300 after 1,000 hr's it's rated for 30,000 hr's. It's about 3 times as bright as a standard 40 watt 4' bulb.

You can see it here:
