In a previous post I had raised the question of Cree LED trims being "listed" for use in other manufactuerers housings, Cree claims their "eco-smart & CR6" LED trims are listed for use in other companies housings but, when I look at their installation instructions it says to go to their web sight for a list of compatible housings. When I go to their web sight it says to refer to the installation instructions. Now I don't have a tail but I feel like I am chasing one.
Isn't it required for a housing and trim to be listed for use as a unit? in other words, you can't put a Cree trim into a Elco housing unless they have been tested and aproved, by an approved testing agency? If I am correct wouldn't that testing agency have a document avalible for viewing that say's so? And how would I access that document, if it is not avalible through the manufactuerer? I have contacted Cree and their reply was vague and they could not produce anything that proves it is acceptible.
It seems to me that there are many products on the market, that get discused here frequently, that claim to be UL listed but don't meet the letter of the code for legal use. They are either constructed of parts that are all UL listed parts, but the unit as a whole is not listed. Or like in this case, the trim is UL listed, the housing is UL listed, but they are not listed for use together. You don't hear Murray saying that you can put their circuit breakers into a SqD panel and claiming both are "UL Listed", why then would it be acceptible for these trims to be used in other manufactures housings? I'm not seeing a difference.
