How do you compensate referrals?

How do you people show appreciation for referrals, from other customers, or other contractors?

Sometimes when I help someone on the phone with a technical problem they compensate
by sending me an Amazon, Lowes , etc, gift card for between $50 & $100.

At least send them a hand-written "thank you" note; if a good-size job comes out of it, sure, send a gift card, too. (Kind of depends on what's done locally.)

Does anyone send holiday cards to customers? The real estate agent who handled my house purchase 11 years ago still leaves me a card and box of See's chocolates every December. (And you can bet I remember that he did a great job and can recommend him to others.)

A box of See's chocolates will definitely be appreciated. I think my dad must've been one of their best customers. He loved them and he was always giving them away for presents. He passed away 6 years ago and See's is still sending their catalogs to his address.

An EC that I used to work for sent me a $250.00 gift card when I turned them onto a project that I was consulting on. They made money and
I was happy.
