Hey guys,

Have a brother who owns his own business. He wants to hire employees but is scared that he will mess up on the taxes etc.

Do you guys use a program? A pay service company?

Thanks!

We tried a payroll program, and ended up paying more in fines, and late fees then it cost to have a payroll service do the payroll.

We use a payroll service. Used to do all of our own payroll and reports for aprox 35 years and always did ok but it took a lot of time and learning all the related tax stuff. We switched to a payroll service and what a relief. They figure all paychecks tax liabilities or other reports you want ,make out checks direct deposit tax reports if you want and give you a cash analysis report . Cost varries depending what you want them to do.

Ditto on the relief of using a payroll service. But there are caveats. First thing is get good references from other local user's of any company, and I would also ask the local IRS rep if they have a good reputation with them also. Some payroll services are not so hot about paying Uncle Sam on time or the right amounts, so be careful who you sign up with. Having said that, I used two different services for years and had zero problems with either one. And the goverment jobs I did with prevailing wage requirements were easyer to manage the paperwork.

I just started using Quickbooks Pro 2007 last year. Like anything, it takes a while to get used to, but I am becoming better each year. Writing paychecks is a breeze. Paying federal payroll taxes isn't bad. New Jersey taxes are a bit harder. I still don't have it set up for electronic payment yet, but I hope to for September.

we have 28 guys in the field 4 in the office and have been using Quickbooks PREMIUM for years. we got the payroll service and direct deposit with no problems what so ever

I use Bank Of Am. All payroll is direct deposit, taxes are handled, and its free so long as all employees are paid via d.d. when hired they open an account for payroll.

When I first started my business i was in the exact same position; scared of payroll. I had a service do it for me. They did it for 4 months at $50 per month. That is too much money to spend on something i can do myself. Quickbooks pro 2007 is super simple to do payroll. It figures everything. Just enter hours and print checks. Tells you when amd how much to pay taxes.
I spend 5 minutes a week on payroll and save $50/month. There is a small fee from quickbooks to be able to do this, but it is very small.

Payroll service. Cost is way cheaper than you'd ever think, and it keeps you out of trouble.

Is the one you use cheaper than $200/yr? If so I would agree and consider finding a local service that may have similar rates. If not I would stay w/Quickbooks.

I don't know. It goes on the accounting bill, but it's not much. Works out to something like 3 dollars a paycheck generated.
