How to you test the GFCI protection of downstream non grounded outlets on a GFCI . The test button shuts off power to all downstream outlets when it is pushed. What really determines if I am protected. What is the test for non grounded two wire systems with non grounded outlets.

Plug a lamp into the downstream outlets and push the test button at the GFCI.

If the lamp goes out you are protected.

There are other ways but there really is no need to make it complicated.

Down stream recepts can also test, without the GFCI test button, by checking voltage --phase to ext.cord grounding prong-- if you have a solenoid tester (wiggy).
