How do you install 1/4 mile of 4/0-4/0-/4/0-/2/0 wire in a ditch, by yourself?

 Use the blade on the trencher to shove it in as you drive buy, according to one of the local irrigation installers.

That way I can start locating faults before either end is connected for the first time, and probably for the next 25 years.

I have a reel trailer and simply anchor one end of the cable and drive the trailer alongside the ditch. Once the wire is next to the ditch, it is fairly simple to rol it into the ditch by yourself. good luck

If the ditch is not too wide, maybe even drive directly over the ditch (trench).

I am curious, what is this for?

If you can move the reel, do as suggested above. If not, anchor the reel at one end and pull the cable with your truch, straddling the ditch.

I have hung the reel by chain with a spreader bar and an axel on the bucket of an excavator and had the operator drive alongside the trench while it spooled out into the trench. I used a tag line to steady the reel to keep it from spinning and bouncing. This particular instalation was for a substation at a single family residence with a 13,200 volt 3 phase service where the house was over 1/2 mile from the road. It is good to be the king.
