Saw this in the food court of a local mall. The area has a large central gas fireplace and this was on a nearby column about 8 feet from the edge of the fireplace.

Is this simply a valve used to directly cut off the gas? At the top of the column I did see that a black iron pipe ran down inside the column - most likely the gas to the fireplace.

Or would this be electrical in nature say, like going to a solenoid valve or to a FAP?

Wild shot in the dark: appears to of the same design of a fire alarm pull station. Most likely a spst switch tied to a solenoid.

It could even control a gas-valve relay reset box, like used in commercial-kicthen fire-suppression systems.

Most likely a valve in the gas line that is exposed when the cover removed. Hospitals use similar setup for emergency interruption of oxygen and other gases.

So, it just exposes a valve handle? Like this looks better??
