Customer wants to remove existing pole with meter/breaker combo 30 feet from house and run it back to next pole underground to new pedestal combo which would make the run about 255ft. New one for me.

No code issue with that, however, with the service disconnect being that far away, I think many AHJs would use 225.31 to require a disconnect at the house.

There is no limits. Longer runs however should take voltage drop into consideration and possibly increase conductor size according to needs.

255 feet is not considered a long run to some people or is just on the starting edge of being considered a long run.

Thanks for the reply. Didn't find any code requirments but it's an unusal project. They have an existing 200a 40circuit panel with main in the basement. Underground runs directly from the existing meter/breaker to the panel. Does not hit the outside of the house before hitting basement panel.

Allset with voltage drop. Just distance. Thank you.

225.31 doesn't give any distance, just says inside or outside and nearest point of entrance.

I think most would expect outside to still be on the structure or in immediate vicinity if not on the structure. Some may go with the "in sight of" definition and allow it to be 50 feet or less though 225.31 does not mention this defined term either.

That is pretty common here. We are scheduled to go from 2017 to 2023 NEC soon, but the Emergency disconnect requirements are amended out, little surprised they did that, so would still be able to continue this practice for now.
