So $1MM would be $1 and another $2000? $1 times 2000? Difference of only $1 in this case but with other numbers can be big difference. I doubt there was a ~$2000 fund for retiring this equipment when the time comes, unless maybe it was a fund designed to grow as time goes by.

Technically correct, but few would get that. We are talking about financial folks, after all. Hence, the somewhat bastardized version.

Complicated even more when you throw in Europe, where 1,000,000 is 1 Million but 1,000,000,000 is one Milliard, 1,000,000,000,000 is one Billion and 1,000,000,000,000,000 is one Billiard. (Not one pool)

This is why scientific notation is so useful. You can identify extremely large and extremely small numbers, without being subject to regional disagreements about what million and billion mean. Anyone who knows how to use a base ten number system, and what multiplication and exponents mean, will know what number you intend.
