How many journeyman per helper

I am doing a job in Ashville, NC and I have heard that the local jurisdiction has a ratio between journeyman to helper, is this true and what is the ratio? I would also like to know what Journeyman license they will accept. We are coming from Florida, so I would think we all should reciprocate...

Don't know about anything local but in NC the license holder or some one listed as a qualifying individual under the license holder must supervise the work. Have never seen a ratio. As far as license there is no such thing in NC as a licensed journeyman. You are a licensed electrical contractor ether in the limited, intermediate or unlimited class or you hold a special license for things like single family dwellings, well pumps and such.

Not really. The licensed guy never has to step foot on the job. NC does not require a journeyman on the job. We do not have a state J man test so it would be hard for them to require that. If you let your employees licensed or not do work that is faulty under your license then you can get in trouble but no one has to "supervise" the work.

In Asheville it is (1) Jman card (or state licensed person) to (2) non card holders and it is pretty well enforced. It must be an Asheville Jman card, they may be accepting other in state cards now but that wasn't the case awhile back.

I was under the impression only Meck County had a J man test. It must be a "city card" not a county one like ours. I googled electrical j man nc a few months back and only meck county came up so I assumed no one else had one.

You are right, it is a "city card" for Asheville, Buncombe County does not have one. Up until a couple of years ago it was a 1 to 1 ratio.

I have yet to figure out why Meck County offers the license yet no J man has to be on the job site supervising helpers.. All the license does is look good on your resume.

That does seem strange.

All the big house roping companies have one supervisor (who may or may not have a state license or J card...most times no license or card) that rides around and makes sure the work is ok. A few inspectors have told me inspecting jobs for those companies are always fun. We work in Meck, Gaston, Cabarrus, Stanley, Iredell and lincoln counties on a regular basis. None of them enforce a j man on the job rule. Only the city of Gastonia in gaston county has their own inspection dept.

I'm sure glad MA hasn't figured out they could make more money by doing county or city licenses. My license cover the whole state in any occupancy or structure with any voltage. We do have a 1 to 1 ratio for helpers though and a license must be on the job.

In the state of West Virginia the WV code says that not more than 3 apprentices per Journeyman or Master

FYI, Wheeling is now on the 2008 NEC.
