Hmmm,

You need to install a fixture above the pool bar. Being the master electrician you are, you:

Get an aluminum ladder and place it IN the water.

Go barefoot so you can get REALLY GOOD contact.

Then use a 110v drill (why bother with a cordless?)

I found this to be humorous if not horrifying. Thought I would pass it along.

I must admit I was impressed by the usage of safety goggles ;)

I had always heard of this picture, but had never seen it until this past weekend. I attended a seminar given by IAEI with Mark Ode of UL and Code Panel 3. He showed this and the soap bottle receptacle floater during the seminar. They got quite a laugh.

I just brought this picture up in conversation last week. We are wiring and 'Endless Pool' (read p.i.t.a.) That has light fixtures above and we need to use planks to support a ladder above the pool.

As for OSHA violations, I don't think this is in the USA, so no violations.

I think I found the explanation. Notice the bottles in the background? Maybe a little nip at lunch, electrocution in the afternoon...

Ohh - I got it!

The dust and chips from his drilling will land in the pool water, therefore causing a hazard to workers who are swimming.

Right?

Click here for a video of more on how not to use a ladder. Notice the head shot and imagine if this was a concrete floor.

I've seen this and about 5 other 'safety first' photos... the 'winner' was a truck with 3 or 4 ladders strapped together to reach about 60 ft (18m) into the air for an electrician to reach the luminary of a row of streetlights... was an amazing sight to see.

In this picture, obviously the guy had to walk through the water to get to the ladder unless he managed to leap sideways onto a ladder holding a plugged in drill.. which brings to mind... how'd he get to the ladder with a plugged in drill..

In addition, undoubtedly not in the usa.. .so almost w/o a doubt 220V 50Hz... better on the heart i hear...

While visiting indonesia, i watched bearfooted bricklayers throwing bricks to each other from 2 floors away, so it's not just electricians ;)

I'll bet this is one of those new fangled drills that are quadruple insulated. I wonder if the ladder has rubber feet!!

It takes all kinds.

Looking at this again I am reminded of an incident I encountered one time during an installation of one of our products.

I was installing one of our machines in a facility. The top of our perimeter guard package was approximately 7' off the floor. We required a new supply conduit run to our machine. The electrician installing the new supply conduit to our machine had placed a ladder (about 20') against our guard package and believe it or not was standing at the top of the ladder working on the conduit! This was a 20' ladder leaning against a 7' guard package and he was at the top. How this ladder remained standing is a mystery to me. When I saw it, I immediately placed my feet against the ladder to prevent the bottom from sliding outward.

He had a guardian angel that day.

Ah, you guys are just soft. Back in my day we had to do all our work like this AND on a an incline. And that meant we had to hold the drill cord in our teeth.

I don't think this is governed by OSHA, so no violation.

But I couldn't believe that just today I was on I-95 and off to my right,(just north of the Blue Rocks stadium)(minor league baseball team), I saw a guy on the top possible rung of what must have been at least a 50' aluminum extention ladder, leaning on said pole, not tied off, no safety harness, nothin'.

This was a utility-type pole and the guy was working on somthing on the very top. I didn't get a great look.

This did Not look like one of our local utility companies, or any utility for that matter.

There were utility poles nearby with primary wires, so they were at very minimum a 35ft. class 3 pole, but I'm guessing they were 40ft, class 2, so this one was at least 50'.
I'll be checking the newspaper tomorrow for sure.
