how much space do you need between a gas pipe and electrical conduit in a trench? Can they occupy the same space? conduit and gas pipe are coming from a home and feeding a work shed. Conduit holds 1 20amp circuit.

see 300.5 2005 NEC

not sure about gas, but in my area gas pipe is to be 12 - 18 inches deep. don't know about separation, call AHJ, as i've never come across this issue.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I did go over ART 300 as well as ART 110 and I don't see anything on gas pipes. I save the AHJ call for last resort.

Check with the local AHJ. There may be a requirement by one of the local utility companies also. Around here the Gas Co. requires a minimum 12" separation between Gas and any other utility. It can be vertical or horizontal and is intended to facilitate repairs later on. We use that rule for all utility separation and it has indeed made repairs very easy when they come up.

From Duke Energy ,Check with the Utility in your area

One (1) gas service can be installed in a joint service trench with electric service cable in conduit, telephone cable, and television cable. The pipe must not be installed closer than six (6) inches from these cables. See Exhibit C for details. Where building lots share the same utility easement or corridor, each joint service trench shall have 3?-0? minimum separation from other joint service trenches and all other utilities.
