I am interesting in how other trades estimate and charge for their work

even more so now with the economy

I recently rear ended someone and i need a new hood for my 2002 f150 xl work truck. It needs a new hood, new grill assembly and a couple other brackets including the hood latch

the 'estimates" were from $2100 for an independant neighborhood shop, $1800 at Maaco and $620 for a shade tree shop (they work on taxis etc and its in the hood)

I am not an autobody estimator but I think the job should really be in the $1100 -$1200 range (based on their labor rate and just guessing) I was actually hoping to find a legit shop around $1100

Its just interesting to me to see that the body shops pricing is still right out of the system
not only with tons of labor but huge mark up on parts

sometimes we think we are high on price but then you see how everyone else is

I know all the HVAC shops have gone to flat rate pricing also

its just interesting to see other trades

I'm not an autobody estimator either but I know the parts will cost at least $620.00, unless they use midnight auto sales.:D:D

And there is the problem. The same is true for electrical work. People will want a quote, on say, a room addition. When a professional gives the estimate they have the same reaction. " It's only some wire and boxes" They have no idea of what goes on and what it takes to install that wire and boxes. Then they proceed to tell you what it should cost because "it shouldn't take more than an hour".

$2100 for an independent neighborhood shop
Local elect. contractor, who will stand behind there work with quality employees and material.

$1800 at Maaco
Elect. contractor who doesn't have top quality help, will do enough to get buy with as little as possible.

$620 for a shade tree shop
Trunk slammer, no insurance,no help, material they found in a dumpster. Do the job. Get the money and run. And not IF but WHEN there is a problem try and find the guy

Botton line is just about every other trade operates to make a better then average living, just about all of them demand better then average earnings, and they makup-everything to max earnings, while electricians look at what other electricians are doing and go down the road of working for wages and afraid to take a business approach to earn better then just wages, most of the auto body shops, are in business to earn a better living, then just working for wages

Thats how it seems to me too. Is it true or just our perspective? If it's true, why? Are we electricians just dumb? Probably not.

Thanks for sharing this post. This is a very helpful and informative material. Good post and keep it up. the 'estimates" were from $2100 for an independant neighborhood shop, $1800 at Maaco and $620 for a shade tree shop (they work on taxis etc and its in the hood) Websites are always helpful in one way or the other, that?s cool stuff, anyways, shared hosting a good way to get started to renovate your dreams into the world of reality.
Thanks
Micheal,
