I also think it would have made for a better story or been more fair to at least give a call to the contractor and ask them if they want to comment.
Noooooo.... there's a sense of wrong doing, mystery, etc. when they leave it at this. Makes for more interesting reading when there's the appearance of a bad guy and a victim. Getting both sides would be more like reading a National Geographic documentary.

It would be interesting to see a bill marked with issues they recommend getting fixed and the customer initials where they declined them.
I have a feeling there's more to this too. In my case, the chimney collapsed in sometime between when the furnace was serviced and when it was fired for the heating season.

I suppose you are right. Often times I see the "no comment" and that seems like they are claiming fault. I worked for a company that SOP was "no comment" if media asked. They had an 800 number to give them, but no one but those specified were to comment on anything.

Newspapers DO NOT CARE as long as they can credit the statement to someone else.

Short version of a LONGGGGGGGGG STORY
I was falsely accused several years ago in a crime (found not guilty in court)
The newspaper reported "Sources say Mr Gaquin served alcohol to minors".

I DO NOT DRINK NOT, NOR ALLOW ALCOHOL in my house, I had to face parents at school with this hanging over me. My lawyer said there was nothing I could do.

If I were Mr Waller I would have been there in a hurry to make my own assesment. I couldn't really be angry at the newspaper if the facts were right but I damn sure would want to get to the bottom of things.

Who is Mr. Waller and how do you know him?

I googled him.

Google is amazing. People often post stories leaving out important words but in about 2 seconds you can link right to it.

For newspapers and the media, printing or providing facts is secondary to selling. Good news is a second rate seller, bad news always sells.

Some reporters will take the stance of "creative editing" to help move their careers and a few more papers/points of rating.

Our company stays as far from reporters as possible due to the nature of the beast.

Do you feel it was appropriate to report the name of the company that did the initial checkup a couple of weeks ago? Who knows what other factors could've been involved here?

I agree that they shouldn't have given the name of the company until after an investigation of the cause of the fire.

I checked out a small electrical fire about 4 years ago and found there was nothing electrical about it. There wasn't even a fire, just lots of smoke. Everyone had really jumped to conclusions as to the cause.
It was in the laundry area of a motel and they just assumed that it was one of the dryers that had recently been installed. I checked power and operation of all the dryers and couldn't find anything wrong. Then a customer told me that one of the washers wasn't working and when I pull the cover I noticed a belt burned in two. The transmition was locked and the smoke from the burning belt had been pulled to the dryer area by an exhaust fan. The washer was full of clothes so it was in use at the time of the incident.

All I had to go on when I got there was a report from the fire deparment saying that smoke was comming from some of the clothes dryers. I spent about 3 hours there checking everything out. If there really is a fire then you can't take any chances. I felt really dumb but what can you do, that's where everyone said the smoke was comming from.

All the appliances in this laundry were new so if anyone could be blamed I guess it was a factory defect. I have no idea who installed any of the appliances but I couldn't find anything wrong. __hit Happens  .

I was called to a laundry room fire a couple years ago.

I found the source pretty quickly.

and repaired it within 24 hours.

way to go expose the company's name when the OP's original intent was to keep it private. :)
