What we have---
4 utility poles with six 1500 watt MH lights on each one-
1" RMC up the side of the pole to approx 9'-
each pole fed with #6 thhn @ 480v on a 30 amp breaker-

Your mission (if you decide to accept it)-
how would you tie the lights in to the #6 feeders?
j-box at the top
continue with RMC or go PVC
use uf or so cord for light whips????

what type of environment is this in? So Cal? Alaska? Death Valley? Next to the ocean?

if I had to do it cheap, I would go pvc up to a box, then SO to the lights. Otherwise, I would consider the environment and choose the best cable I could find for sunlight resistance, temperature extremes, etc. If the lights will be serviced by somone climbing the pole, I would consider RMC all the way up as opposed to PVC. Maybe consider a local disco for servicing the lights.

I'm listening. The lights are for the pit area at a dirt track.
The poles are 40' with about 33-34' above ground.
What would be the best wire for the light whips?

Dirt Track - RMC, so when the cars flip end over end into the pole it will have a chance.

Also I would keep anything that could be cut or spliced as far off the ground as possable. Never know when someone will climb on top of their trailer to try and tap into the 480 for 120v loads. If it's like the ones I seen, it can be full of drunk people with tools trying to do anything possable to get their car back on the track.

the SO cables connecting the lights would be 30ft up.
