How would you extend this?

I need to transition this circuit to a stretch of exterior EMT. Whoever installed this left it this way. Somebody else's problem!

Would a weatherproof extension ring (or two) fit? Would it be kosher in your opinion?

The screw on the right tells me it's an adjustable-depth box. Can the box be brought flush with the siding ring?

That screw on the right side of the box indicates that it is one of those Carlon adjustable boxes so there is a chance it can be made flush, that would be easier than a spark ring.

That's an adjustable box alright but it looks really wedged in there. Looks as if someone has already tried using the adjustment screw.

I would be more worried about sealing the hole to keep moisture out of the wall than anything else.
I can't tell how long the conductors are. I could just remove adjustable box and come directly into the back of a double gang bell box ( big enough to cover the hole with a bead of caulk at the top & sides to prevent rain from getting in ). If not a box extension with exterior bell box.

Concur. Hopefully screw makes it flush, if not than a gap filler to bring it to a WP extension ring. I've brought EMT out of lots of exterior receptacles with WP ext rings.

Thanks for all the responses. That adjustable box is new to me, but based on your observations I'm not hopeful it can be adjusted outward. Looks stuck. I'm hoping to avoid surgery on that wooden frame-out but it may be unavoidable.

My biggest concern is keeping water out. Is that type of plastic box considered acceptable for an exterior location? I figure I will have to shoehorn a weatherproof extension ring on it somehow, just wondering if an inspector would require the whole thing to be redone.

As long as it remains flush it is not exterior. Whatever you extend it with (like a bell box extension maybe) would need to be exterior rated. Gasket or caulking becomes necessity not only for keeping that plastic box dry but for sake of keeping water outside of the structure.

Bring some long #6 screws in case the ones that come with it don't reach.

With one of these sandwiched in there, if needed:

And some silicone if the gasket isn't good enough.

Correct me if I am wrong. I believe turning the screw on the right will adjust box depth. When I remodeled my kitchen I purchased the resi boxes where I could adjust the depth for tile thickness. Worked out great, just turned the screw and flushed my boxes nicely.

Weatherproof extension boxes are available both with and without flanges:

Be sure to choose the correct one for the size of the siding box.

IMO its not really an issue of interior vs exterior, its more about wet vs dry. Putting a "weatherproof" box or cover over it makes it dry. IIRC there isnt a code section saying the interior of a weather proof box outside is a wet location, like there is for raceways.
Exactly, we use dry location boxes for exterior luminaires all the time as well, and most those don't even have any kind of gasket like WP receptacle covers do.
