I haven't studied these devices but I was reading about the old trigger start fluorescents that required a starter. I assume the theory of operation is the same. The ignitor has some thermal or bimetallic switch that turns the ballast on and off very rapidly to provide an inductive kick. Or maybe it doesn't work that way at all.

Pete I am not sure what they do but at this point I think they are full electronic not bi metal.

The Advance web site will probably have your info.

Great link Bob. It has all the info I could ever need about HID systems. And it answered my question too.
