Is there a difference between hps bulbs .We have a wide range of 50 - 250 watt fixtures used for in doors. Trying to get the clearest [white] light bulb we can put in these fixtures. Without changing the fixtures is there a better rating of hps bulb for a whiter light ?

I don't believe there are different color levels of HPS lamps like there are for fluorescent. Sometimes the color varies a bit with different manufacturers.
Conversion MH lamps are available that will run on HPS ballast.

Agree, the color of HPS lamps varies a bit, but not much.
Small HPS lamps are not that efficient, and CFLs might be more suitable than 50 watt sodium lamps. If the existing 50 watt HPS uses a standard screw base, then it may be possible to remove the control gear and fit a CFL.
For the larger lamps I would consider metal halide lamps as suggested above, some types are designed to work on existing HPS ballasts.

If you are concerned about color/ color rendition HPS needs to go. HPS is the worst lamp for color but about the most efficient otherwise (except for maybe LED) when it comes to light output vs energy input. It is ideal for most general outdoor lighting. Idoors it is a very poor choice in most cases only because of the color problems. Large manufacturing areas and the like it may be acceptable with some other supplemental lighting near certain task areas to improve the color rendition in those areas.

Yes there is. There are color corrected HPS with a higher CRI that allows close to true daylight color rendering. The spectrum range can also be problematic with MH and fluorescent as well and they are also available with a higher CRI index. The higher CRI always comes with a higher price and shorter life. In some applications there is a specific color need to be emphasized, for example a special fluorescent tube available for meat display, another one for clothes retailers.
