My customer says that the GFI outlets in her kitchen and one in her bathroom occasionally emit a "humming" sound. Has anyone encountered this before? Do you know what causes it?

Many thanks for any help or ideas.

better than singing - couldn't resist --- could be a loose connecting maybe the terminal threads were over tightened & striped causing the connections to be loose -- change one out & see if it remedies the issue.

Yes, have had this happen a couple of times usually in relationship to a wall paddle fan speed control being used.
It's really weird, I think it has to due with the capacitance and motor inductance setting up a tank circuit or a very common problem with the internal contacts of a fan control switch not mating up with its position and in turn arcing.
But what has worked for me is replacing the GFCI as it could be a defective MOV inside.

Thanks. I appreciate the ideas, and the "singing" joke. I'll be checking them out tomorrow and will try your suggestions.

I've experienced that on some of the Pass & Seymour GFI receptacles when you first power them up. If you push the reset then test and reset again and it goes away. I know this isn't a scientific test but I haven't had them hum after going through that process.
