440.35 gives the requirements for multimotor and combination-load equipment conductors. And this is straight forward; 125% of the RLA plus fan in your average compressor unit = MSA. conductors may be based on Next Size Up.

But what's the requirement for the OCP on such a unit. One would expect to find this in section VI of 440 entitled; Motor Compressor and Branch Circuit Overload Protection. Yet there is no sub paragraph entitled Multimotor and Combination-Load. So what would the maximum OCPD be?

Forgive me if I misunderstood your question but afaik, by code, hvac equipment is supposed to have its own dedicated circuit. Therefore, you can simply refer to the mfg. of the unit for its max OCP which should be on the data plate of the unit.
