This is an example of a capacitor failure on a HVAC unit. Notice the bulging at the top of the capacitor.

Today, all digital set-back thermostats have a "Compressor Protection" feature with a 5-minute delay built in. This is to make sure that the high side and low side equalize before the next cycle.

Maybe more time is needed to prevent this problem ?

In our Maintenance Contracts, we include changing out this "Combination" capacitor every year, this Service Call was not a customer. Our cost is $11.00, and we charge the customer $75.00.

We have been told that other HVAC companies want to replace the unit, when it is only a defective capacitor.
