Have a friend who is an EC. Roughed a HO home, afterwhich the HVAC people ran a AC duct over his wires. The wires now are behind the duct. The electrical inspector failed him and claimed the wires have to be run around the duct. Is this a code violation? If so, which one. Thanks in advance for any help.

Well

Well

That is the thing,, the inspector did not site a code number, he merly said that the sheet rock wall will protrude and the wires have to be moved. My friend claims the duct will move in the approiate amount and the wall will be straight. This inspector does have a rep for being a stickeler, but if there in fact is no violation should the EC have to remove and re-do all his work?

In order for him to claim there is a violation he has to prove that one exists. This means he needs to provide a specific Article number. With out that the inspector would be free to make up his own rules. If the duct will move then he should get the HVAC guy to strap the duct so that it isn't pushing on the cable. If he created the problem he should fix it.

hvac chase

hvac chase

nothing irritates me more than having a perfect wiring job until the hvac and plummers come in. Most of them have no respect for wires.

I'd like to barf out that wiring, being more flexible than duct or piping, should be done last, not first. Let them fight that one out.

I have always felt that electrical be done as a final step before insulation and drywall.Especially A/C.Smoke detector placement condensor placement all are needed to be known before wiring is done.Plumbing sometimes becomes an issue but for the most part mechanical, A/C presents the most problem if done after us.
I agree the inspector must site an applicable code violation .But some just site opinions and say thats the way it is.

What bugs me is that Mr AC never looks where our light fixtures and cans go.They just put there stuff in where ever they like often making it imposable to line our cans up to print.Guess what i do ? MOVE IT OR I CUT IT.

Just to ask, what if we go first, and not look where the the registers go? A room only has one middle; what if the ceiling light and ceiling AC register are both supposed to be centered?

Simple, i am bigger so they move LOL.In reality they seldom need to be exactly in 1 spot and usually could move a foot or 2.

We run into the same kind of problems also. We rough in the smoke detectors first, then an AC guy puts his duct about 6" from the box. Or just the other day we are in a hotel, all roughed in, then here comes the sprinkler guy, he puts the heads about 3 ft from our lights on the 3rd floor, then on the 2nd floor for some reason, he decides to put the heads 2 inches from our boxes, come on, how big a light does he expect that we are going to install. Well, we moved the light boxes after a change order was issued. Some of these trades need saddle time on some projects.

If the prints shows my fixture in a spot then thats where i put it.When you make the AC man come back to move his register he will learn from it.Do it for him and he learns nothing.

Why would the wiring be done before the HVAC and plumbing? Those guys often have limited options for putting in their stuff, while it's a lot easier for us to route wiring around obstacles.

As for respect for others' work, I agree that many trades only seem to care about their work and don't give a rip how it affects anyone else. A good GC should be able to deal with these issues, but most of the jobs I do don't involve a good GC. Mostly I deal with HOs who are playing GC.

I appreciate

I appreciate

all the comments. My friend and I spoke to the HVAC people and they agreed to modify the ducting. The inspector has also "moved positions" and admitted it is just one of his pet peives. I guess one for the good guys.

Thnaks again.
