My mechanical co-worker asked if there's a NEC clearance requirement for a HVAC control cabinet powered by 120V. I said no but that I'd verify with a credible source.

NEC 110.26 applies to Electrical Equipment only right? Certainly it's good construction practice to provide clearance in front of control cabinets but can you apply the NEC to HVAC control equipment?

Thanks

Yes. If the cabinet won't operate without voltage, it's electrical equipment. If it is likely to require examination while energized, then 110.26(A) will apply.

This truly even includes items running at "low voltage", like a 24 volt control panel. Smaller depth measurements may be allowed with written permission.

Thanks Volta. Its hard to believe that anything mounted on a wall that requires 120V power also requires a min. of 3' clearance. I'd never considered that before.

Well, just those that may require attention while energized. But 120 volts can kill, so a little elbow room is nice  .
