I was talking to a friend of mine today that owns a small HVAC company.
He said that he was considering hiring a full time electrician and apprentice to do his temp control wiring.

This is in Massachusetts.
I told him that he should be carefull to not get into trouble with the licensing board.

I know that in Mass a journeyman can be in business and can have one apprentice.
If more than one journeyman, then one must have a master license in the company name and be an officer of the company.

Would the same be true if this is an HVAC company?
Can they just hire a journeyman, or must the HVAC company have an electrical master that is an officer of the company before they can even hire one journeyman?

I don't want to see him get into something that will be a problem for him with the state.

I am trying to talk him out of this and have him just sub out the electrical to me. I doubt that he can keep an electrical crew busy full time all year long.

Yes, the HVAC company would need to hire a master electrician and make him an officer of the corporation. There is at least one company in our area who did just that.

Also a journeyman can only do business in the name on his license. i.e. John Smith, electrician, not John Smith electric.

Even if the HVAC hired a master, the master needs to change the name on his license to the HVAC co. The state will issue a new license number to him with the new company name.

If the HVAC company is not incorporated, I don't think it works at all, even hiring a master. The Master would need to "own" the company, or at least be a formal partner.

I think the HVAC company should just keep subbing out the work.
