We have a customer that wants to replace some 15 ton rooftop heat pumps. The manufacturer will only sell them either without backup electric heat or with a level of electric heat that will make the MCA over the rating of the present wire.
The customer who is large enough to buy the units themselves has found an after market supplier of electric heat designed for the unit that is of suitable KWs to made the MCA below that of the present wire. The after market supplier is telling them that this will be fine with the electrical inspector. I'm not believing them, I say that it will be rejected under 440.4(B). the after market supplier as not even offered a suggestion on what the MOCP would be !!
I am going to call the AHJ in the morning but would welcome any opinions or comments from the vast knowledge base here.
