In a new HVAC unit here at work, the motor (3 Phase 480v) feeders are a MTW #8, approximately 3'long, ty-raped together in a bundle, not in any raceway at all and then secured at the motor head with a 1 1/4" romex connector. Where I looked in the NEC, for plenum rated inatallation, every thing must be in some type of approved raceway, how does a manufacturer get away with a installation like this? Is there something I missed in the NEC that allows this wiring method in a plenum? All signal and sensor control wiring is done the same way.

Re: HVAC Wiring

Howdy,

It sounds like you are describing the wiring inside of the unit. If so, the NEC does not apply.

Manufactureres follow a different code and it allows for many different types of wiring inside units.

What codes dictate wiring inside machines and such?
If its a UL listed item than UL decides. If its an industrial machine, NFPA79 governs. If its a plastics machine, some other code (I forget which) applies.

i wonder if there is a code for process type equipment (like chemical plants). Anyone know?

Re: HVAC Wiring

Would you believe:

NFPA 499
Recommended Practice for the Classification of Combustible Dusts and of Hazardous (Classified) Locations for Electrical Installations in Chemical Process Areas
