I have read some research on this topic. I guess there are two ideas that are being pursued. The first is transformation of the hydrocarbon molecule (methane) into hydrogen, and then use of a fuel cell. The other idea is direct utilization of the methane, but problems with carbon deposit and temperatures issues are slowing the porgress on this development. Basicsally, a direct methane fuel cell is still a combustion engine.

Yes there are some applications in service. I believe the Seattle metro wastewater has an application.
