680.71 requires Hyd. Bathtubs to be protected by a GFCI. Is a breaker or receptacle preferred? Also, does a switch need to be installed to shut off the tub? I would think that the controls are prewired with the tub.

My preference: Dead front GFI in an inconspicuous location - location depends on bathroom layout.
Probably the most expensive option and most convenient for the HO.

Next option:
GFI located under the tub, right by the motor and access door.
Not quite as expensive or convenient for the HO as my preference, but I'm not the one buying it.

Last option:
GFI CB.
2nd most expensive, least convenient for the HO.

A switch is not required as the plug is the means of disconnect.

If the unit doesn't have a built in timer, that's a nice sell for you.

I've always used a GFI breaker, usually along with a wall switch. Old habits die hard. I'm used to the switch from the days when tubs came with timers. I kept them for the occasions when air switch fails, in which case you could install a timer.

I'm about to change to the faceless GFI so customer doesn't have to go to panel if it trips.

If I use a switch, how far does it have to be from the edge of the tub? I'm sure it has to be GFCI protected.

If I use a faceless GFCI, how far does that have to be from the tub?

The switch wouldn't have to be GFI protected ~ only the tub
You could put the switch right next to - but not IN the tub area (404.4) .

Just as long as it is NOT in the tub (assuming that since switches and recept.s are generally not allowed IN the tub/shower) - but confer with the HO so as the location won't be an "eye-sore".

In my house, the faceless GFI is located about 6" under the towel bar. Completely out of sight - completely accessible, and if you move the towel ~ within sight! LOL. (Not a requirement)
