Part way through the text at 250.52(A)(1) is this language: "Interior metal water piping located more than 5 feet from the point of entrance to the building shall not be used as a part of the grounding electrode system......."

OK. Here's my hypothetical: There's a short section of copper piping cut into a CPVC water system that transitioned to copper so as to use a copper ball valve at a hot water furnace. If I were to run a conductor from the main service panelboard (in a dwelling) to this isolated piece of copper piping that the building official wanted "bonded", would I violate the text above?

In my way of thinking, the equipment grounding conductor of the furnace is bonding any metal parts "likely to become energized" and therefore "bonding" this short section of piping would, in effect, make it a part of the grounding electrode system.

I don't think that running a bonding jumper means you are using the pipe as part of the GES.

If it did, so would the EGC running to the unit.
