I am trying to run my house furnace off my portable generator but when I plug the furnace into the generator I receive a “reverse polarity “ lockout.

I am trying to run my home furnace off a portable generator. The furnace has a plug installed. So when I unplug the furnace and plug it into the generator I get a “reverse poliarty”lockout on the furnace. I tried swapping the wires but that didn’t work. I have read about bounded grounds on generators, could that be my problem? If so how do I get around this or what do I need to do to allow my generator to power my furnace?
