I had what on the surface seemed like a simple wiring change - to install a timer in place of the switch that turns on the lights around the front of my house - but it ended up taking a lot longer than I thought it would because whoever wired my house 30+ years ago used the box behind the pair of switches there by my front door as a hub through which wiring for other parts of the house passes. I know a lot of electricians, and a lot of them seem perpetually angry. Anyone who spends very much of their time trying to cram a bunch a bunch of #12 solid copper conductors and wire nuts into a plastic box that is clearly TOO SMALL is going to be habitually pissed off.

I feel your pain. :D

As bad as it can be sometimes how make up is done makes a huge difference I've seen an overstuffed box that could fit a gfi or dimmer because of how wires were layed and I've seen a power in and out with switch leg in a 22in^3 box not able to fit a dimmer. The euro ways are much tighter but it all fits because of how things are arranged.
