A little background: I have been arguing with an engineer at an existing facility here in Dallas, Tx. They have several panels that have wires being spliced inside of the panel, red wire nuts Ect... Cause they were not long enough

I have been telling him they need to be repaired and the wire re-pulled so it is a complete installation, this is also a critical data site.

He finally told me that if I can come up with the NEC violation, then he will approve the repair. I have looked and looked and I cannot find anything that can come close other than it just isn't done, like in work practices ect...

I have had inspectors flag me on this before.

Anyone out there have a code reference I can use, I want to get this fixed ASAP.

Thanks

Bill

You wont find that to be a violation in the NEC. It is allowed. Not more than 75% can be splices in the panel, so if all the wires coming in are spliced, then you may have something.

I appreciate you finding that for me

I appreciate you finding that for me

I am going to fix it anyway, I can bury the cost in another project. I just do not like it being there.

Thanks

Bill

So I guess we can assume that you don't like the splices at the other end of the circuit either? Or you just don't like the ones in the panel? Do the connections work - or just unsightly? Are they any less reliable than any other in the circuit?

Sure it may not look nice when you open the panel and see them - kind of like walking into a bathroom right after someone else has been in there and left a funk - it stinks.... And when someone walks in after you - they think you did it...

If you feel that it bothers you enough to throw some time and money at it - so be it... But burying the money elsewhere may come back to bite you when it eats the buffer on whatever that is - it looks like a loss... But in reality it was a give away. If they don't want to pay for this work - don't do it IMO. Take a picture of before and after and leave a note inside the panel saying - "Some other schmuck did all that splicing and other crap work in here - not I." - If that makes you feel better. Dare I say it - I have done just that on a few occassions.... Back when I used to work in a complex of buildings we would write all manner of things in the inside of the panel covers. e.g. "Jake was here, marvel at his piss-poor work!" - "The drunk who did this s~*t needs another cold one, and a hole in his head!"

If you make your way around Telco closets often you'll find much the same sprawled all over the back-boards.....

Bill, I don't want to seem rude but to me that is just nuts.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with splices in a panel. Sure it may not look as nice, but there is no safety issue or code issue.

Spend you time and effort on something more important. :)

I would also ask what you would do if you were installing a shunt trip breaker with short factory leads, in most cases these leads have to be spliced in the panel.

You guys are right..
I inherited the problem, now I am just going live with it.

I am going to leave a note in the panel like e57 suggested, I just do not want anybody to think I did the work. I take pride in what I do, so yes it is personal.:D

Thanks
Bill

If you work there long enough, you will probley wind up makeing changes in that panel over the years and eventually get it cleaned up anyway....

If it were a "problem" I and,. I believe others here, would encourage you to solve it... .I also take pride in my work and ,...GASPY GASP GASP I have spliced wires in panels:roll:

Pride can take many forms. I do take pride in my work, that is for sure.

But I can not say I would be proud to force the spending of money just to eliminate a few (or a lot of) wire nuts in a panel just so no one would think I spliced in a panel.

I try not to make any extra splices in any location but when they are needed I do not loose any sleep over it.

Very true. Arguing about Code minutiae is the most important thing in the world.

Oh thank goodness, I was beginning to rethink my whole life for a moment.

The splices in the panel must be a really nice thing to look at, if it wasn't every wire in the panel it might not seem so bad, but that has to be something like 70 wire nuts ? Please take a picture and post it.

Yeah, It's just electrical! It's not something dangerous like painting or drywall.
Paint has Lead in it and drywall dust gives you white boogers!:D
