So. I would like to take my outdoor sconce and make it into a single switched recept. For my wife's new fancy hanging bistro light strings...

The place I got stumped is the sconce is on a pancake box and I can't seem to find a round outdoor in use box.

Does anyone have any pointers as to how to accomplish my goal?

Yes!!! A square peg can fit in a round hole... lol... thank you... I shall attempt this... hopefully the aesthetics please the boss lady...

What do y'all think about just replacing the lamp with a screw in plug adapter thingy (I have no idea what it's actually called)?

The only drawback is lack of gfci protection unless I change the breaker...

I like the suggestion tho. I will keep u posted.

Unless more ideas flow. Thank you again.

If only 3-1/2 inch diameter pancake box, remove it, hopefully you have enough slack in cable to get sheath into the bell box and cover the hole with that 2 gang box.

If you have enough cable and not enough sheath then cut sheath off of a new piece of Rome’s and slide it over the old. Then tape it at the joint. It’s like taping a piece of Rome’s that has been nicked.

I know I'm not being inspected on this project, but my AHJ (IE the wife) has a different view of using tape... lol... so here is my temporary solution until I get the material suggested here. The circuit is Guffied at the panel as an fyi... also, it looks like this TEMPORARILY. I am well aware of its visual limitations... but for tonight's soiree it will do.

I meant here to use a two gang bell box and cover the old hole with it. was in a little bit of hurry when I posted, left and came back with that reply still on the screen and realized it didn't exactly say what I wanted it to say.

Can you remove the box and see if there is a stud behind it?

If not, I would cut in an Arlington In-Box there. It should cover that hole completely. The template allows for you to cut two 4” round holes side-by-side for it to slide in, or you can just use an oscillating tool and cut the lines exactly.

You could then install a GFCI recep in the box to be compliant.

Can you cut the cord end off of the fixture since the odds of you returning it are slim to none I’m sure. Get a round w.p. Plate for the box drill a 1/2” hole and use a w.p. Connector for the cord entering the plate? Not the best way but it may look better.
