I know this is not an NEC question. But with the great amount of knowledge on this forum I thought I would give it a try.
I need some help from the motor experts. A friend called today, he has a small import metal lath, the motor is a 2 HP single phase 120 volt, reversible. Long story short , one of the two capacitors on the motor exploded. It literally danced around on the floor of his shop in flames. My questions are: 1) what is the function of the capacitors, 2) what is the typical failure mode of the capacitors, 3) what could cause such a failure, and 4) what should we do to fix it?
Thanks,
Jerry
