I live in eastern Pa. A lot of municipalities are starting to use the international residental code which seems to differ from our NEC. Since they are the AHJ we have to comply.Where can i find the IRC for electricians ?
thanx, caminoguy1

It's not all that different...

But enough to be a pain. :D

I thought that there was a thread on the differences between the IRC and the NEC, but couldn't seem to find it.

Bryan is right that the IRC electrical section is based on the NEC.

Luckily, here in Utah if any differences between the NEC and the IRC occur, then the NEC prevails.

No disrespect meant to Mr. Green (president of the ICC) but the day that NC adopts the IRC I will leave the electrical trade and take up being a double naught spy or brain surgery.
I love NFPA!

Well here if I do a job that is strictly electrical like an upgrade I will get an electrical inspector who goes by the NEC. If I do a job like a remodel or a restoration I will get my electrical inspected by a general building inspector who goes by the IRC. Many times the general inspectors will have a very limited knowledge of electrical, but they will be very picky on the little bit they do know.

The IRC has a condensed version of the NFPA 70A. It is missing some key sections but provides the essential requirements for installation of electrical systems in a dwelling.

ICC is rapidly growing and expanding its influence. It may be advisable to begin reviewing these documents as many states and local jurisdictions are adopting these model codes.

I am an inspector in Pa. and very rarely look at the IRC for electrical.I use the the NEC.If you read section 3301 it references the NFPA 70.My question is, Is the building inspector certified in electrical inspections.

That leaves "international playboy" open for me :)

Is the building inspector certified in electrical inspections.

There are a lot of states that have combination inspectors that have to be certified in all aspects of building. Utah is one of these states. I am not sure how many other states are like this.

Pa. is one of the states that have combination inspectors. The problem is that half of them were grandfather in during the adoption of the I-codes.This means you can inspect electrical with even have opened the NEC for 5 years.
