Re: IAEI Members Get More For Their Money!

This is the first year in about 40, that I am not renewing any of my memberships, licenses, or certifications.

I am back to where I started, nothing for my resume :p

I dropped my membership this year. The fees were just to high. Our section was down to having just one meeting a year and the quality of the training was far below what is available on internet sites like this. I'm spending my dollars on training that is actually usefull.

As long as I am an inspector, I will continue membership.
Have done so, at my expense, since 1985.

At $90 for 6 issues of the IAEI NEWS, it does seem steep. The last few issues have improved over the issues of a three to five years ago.

Of course, every three years, lately, a NEW NEC was included.

I liked the quanity and quality of the IAEI NEWS of 14 to 18 years ago as opposed to three to five years ago.

All of the IAEI Chapter and Section meetings that I attended were well run and I do not remember of any early quit's.

I'm like Charlie, the one's I've been to have been well worth the expense. Just wish I could have gone to Orlando.

Again, except for the last Chapter meeting, all expenses except the State Grant help, came out of my pocket.

Do the dues come out of your pocket?

I am at the IAEI 75th anniversary meeting in Orlando, I have found it to be very worhwhile. The vendors are interested in my comments and I also find the sessions worthwhile. I flet the cost for registration was extremely reasonable for a week long conference it was $250. I have a 2 1/2 day conference in Baltimore in a few weeks, it is $500 and the spouse program is $80 for one evening, as opposed to $50 for the whole week.
While the IAEI dues may seem high, they actually are less than what it would cost to get the same amount of CEU's eleswhere. You may not know this but you get credits for each year of membership and can get a code book or similar with 3 credits (this may of changed recently).
I also find attending IAEI meetings to be very worthwhile because of the industry experts that are here....if you need an answer you can go to UL, NFPA, ETL or a CMP member or chair...

Re: IAEI Members Get More For Their Money!

I cann't say how other chapters conduct thier training sessions but the last half a dozen or so I attended always had a couple inspectors reading the canned IAEI powerpoint presentation. For my training dollar I want somebody like Mike Holt actually "teaching" the material.I think $90.00 per year is just to much for a magazine, and thats all I've been getting out of the IAEI lately. To the best of my knowledge my state does not give CEU's merely for IAEI membership. I'm curious, what states do?

I had let my membership lapse two years ago, but will get back on ASAP. Cost wasn't the issue and would not be now, time was my problem. I miss the magazine.

IAEI
Really what is the IAEI? Is it a magazine you can pick up off the store rack? Is it a meeting you can go to once a month, that has members interested in the same issues you have? Is it an organization that is not only producing the magazine, but helping to drive the industry? How do they go about producing the magazine, the Power Point Presentations, the books, the seminars, the future offerings they are planning?

There are actual people who do this, many of them, and they are not the highest paid in their respective industries. What they are, is very dedicated individuals who work very hard to support an organization of people who they will probably never meet. That is dedication.

But that is only a small part of the IAEI. This organization is really about the MEMBERS. The membership of the organization is what makes the local division, the section chapter, and the international.
That brings us to member involvement. What I have to pay dues and be involved, no way I think I will stay home and learn nothing!
If that is your attitude, the IAEI is not looking for you dues, and you can stay home and wallow in your ....!
The IAEI is an active membership participation organization. The dues is $90.00, for that you receive a magazine and membership. IF I was to receive the magazine only, I also would not be willing to pay $90.00.
So here is the deal!

Join the IAEI, yes all people in this industry should absolutely join. Why?
1. The membership dollars do not go to just the magazine. The dollars also go towards research and development of our industry.
2. Membership also allows you to the meetings. At these meetings (you need to attend) you will not only get current information about local 'stuff', but you may meet new people in you area who have the same interests as you. At these meetings if your local division has any issues with the IAEI, here is the chance to spell them out. You can learn a lot of very useful information.
One poster mentioned that the education was poor at best. Remember I said this is a member participation organization. If your division is not providing you and the members what you want/need, get involved. There are many ways that the IAEI will help if you reach out to them, that is their ultimate goal.

In each organization their is a need for dedicated individuals, some who are willing to give up their time (the most precious thing we all possess). These dedicated people will gain not only the respect of their fellow members, but a deep satisfaction of helping others and the industry to take baby steps further into our future.

So if you are dissatisfied with paying the $90.00, please do not quit, get involved and help to make the organization you belong a better one.

I have left out maybe the most important part of the organization. The inspector - contractor relationship.
The IAEI is very involved in education of the inspectors not only in code, but in ethics also. We all know what can happen out there, and the IAEI is making headway to help establish a good working relationship with the inspectors and people in the field.
The local division I belong to has very good participation by most of the 14 inspectors, we average 11 at every meeting. We also have some vendors who not only provide some of the best presentations I have been to, but they are at no extra cost! Next time you go to a meeting and you are not satisfied, don't leave and quit. Get involved, ask to help, maybe setup a vendor for a future meeting. When you do, I assure you something very wonderful will happen. You will be very proud of yourself!

and furthermore, to follow a Class Act I will only say that this was their past, and is now the present, and will be the future!!

Re: IAEI Members Get More For Their Money!

This subject of dues being rather high for a magazine has me thinking and I would like to add one other message.
I am just a small time person with no name recognition. I am very involved with the local division of the IAEI in my area. I have spent countless hours and some of my own money to help the local division, and I am satisfied with being able to help. I by no means am saying that to get the benefits I mentioned in my earlier post that all of the members need to do the same.
Sometimes you never know how you may be repaid for your efforts, even though the effort should be not to be repaid, but because you believe in something.
I have just returned from the IAEI Disney convention and I have returned with two things I did not expect to come back with.

I met and developed in a short amount of time some very fine relationships with other people in our industry from around the country - PRICELESS!!!

I also received from the vendors attending about 75 pounds of material that they were willing to give free of charge. I had to ship it home as I had no room to take it on the plane.
ATP- 3 books
Erico - books and pamphlets that you cannot get on their website.
Square D- the same
UL - 65 of their White Books for a presentation I am providing. A $ 1,950.00 value.
They are also going to send one of their field reps to participate - also no charge.
The list goes on and I will waste no more space, but if I was to put a dollar value I would say around $3,000.00 worth of merchandice.

I am sure I am not the only one to benefit in such a fashion. So one day, you never know when, you may also benefit in some manner.

Actually I am kind of GOOFY!
This place had many different conventions at the same time. A Barbie Doll convention was there, you should have seen them!
Also the last day we were there, a nurses convention came in ... I should have extended my stay!

Pierre:

I saw someone who looked exactly like you and he was in the park wearing big ears near the UL center, at least I thought it was you?

I will put together the images I took of the people there in the next couple of days for everyone to see (along with some interesting images of electrical systems).... I saw some I haven't seen since the early 80's!

I also sent a box of information home with CD's and files and NEMA standards that would have cost over $1000.00! And don't forget the CD of the 2005 NEC Reports and Draft for free!

Oh, they said that the questions and answers from the forum would be posted onto the IAEI web site soon in a week or so, so keep looking or maybe someone will let us know when it becomes available.

I have been an IAEI member since 1967 and have visited most of the chapters and attended the section meetings many times.

I'll probably attend the Eastern and Southwester Section next year in the Catskills and Las Vegas.
