IBC section 308.5 identifies as Group I-4 day care facilities. When referring to section 907 to see what is required for this group classification and a fire system there is nothing for I-4. What gives???

I'm working with New Jersey's edition of the IBC, so it may or may not be the same as yours. The general requirement for Group I occupancies is for a manual system per 907.2.6. Everything else modifies this basic requirement.

Per 907.2.6, a manual fire alarm system is required. There is no requirement for an automatic fire alarm system, probably because there are no overnight stays.

Be careful though. The last daycare we did was licensed by the State. The local AHJ required compliance with the IBC. But we found out later that the State required compliance with Life Safety 101. Daycares are one place where the two differ. LS 101 will require smoke detectors in the corridors, and maybe a few other places (i cant remember exactly where.)

I think you also have to have an alarm on sprinkler waterflow.

And per NFPA 72, you may need a smoke detector at the fire alarm panel depending on what year code you are under. (2008 I think there is an exemption if there are sprinklers covering the area around the fire alarm panel.)
