It's been a long time since my interview, 1996 or so. A suit would not have been appropriate. More casual, but neat, clean and not so office looking worked the best. The NJATC is looking for hands on workers, not BA wannabes.
JMHO
IBEW Local 275 back in the day.
i'd tend to agree. the people sitting across from you
are sparkies.
clean, correctly fitting levis, a polo shirt
with a collar, clean shaven, reasonable hair...
(if you have a mohawk that won't fit under a hardhat,
it'll be a short interview.)
consider you may be facing a fairly conservative fellow,
who is looking at you as if he would want you on his crew.
if you have "sleeves", consider wearing long sleeves over them.
nose ring? safety pin thru the eyebrow? lose 'em.
the apprenticeship director of my home local, who used to be
the business agent of the local, knew me by the time the interview
came around. it took them 5 months to decide on the number of
apprentices that year, and i gave a call every ten days or so, asking
about when they were going to start testing.
they knew i wanted in, they knew i'd do what it took.
the interview lasted five minutes....
Q: why do you want to be an electrician?
A: i've decided this is what i want to do with my life's work,
and this is where i want to learn how to do it. if you won't
have me, i'll have to learn it and do it somewhere else, but
this is as good as it gets, from my point of view.
Q: well, that seems to cover it pretty well. thanks for coming in.
by the way, do you drink?
A: does beer count?
Q: no, beer doesn't count. thanks for coming in.
