I have my second interview this week with local 363 ibew .

the first interview went well .

Does anyone have any tips on what I should wear ,
.what questions they will ask me

anything that will help me will be appreciated .

Yes Harriman ny 363 ibew.

i live in nj but will be relocating to their jurisdiction

if I get in.

ill have to do a year of labor history befor I start as a first year apprentice .

Ill be taking a hudge paycut but I'm so excited for this opertunity

Even though you're apply to an apprenticeship program you should look professional. To me that means wearing a suit. As far as questions go, the questions that we were asked when interviewed 30+ years ago are probably not even allowed to be asked anymore.

Maybe someone who's interviewed recently can chime in.

thank you for your time , I'll let you know how the interview went .

Im so excited can't wait .

It's been a long time since my interview, 1996 or so. A suit would not have been appropriate. More casual, but neat, clean and not so office looking worked the best. The NJATC is looking for hands on workers, not BA wannabes.

JMHO

IBEW Local 275 back in the day.

i'd tend to agree. the people sitting across from you
are sparkies.

clean, correctly fitting levis, a polo shirt
with a collar, clean shaven, reasonable hair...
(if you have a mohawk that won't fit under a hardhat,
it'll be a short interview.)

consider you may be facing a fairly conservative fellow,
who is looking at you as if he would want you on his crew.

if you have "sleeves", consider wearing long sleeves over them.
nose ring? safety pin thru the eyebrow? lose 'em.

the apprenticeship director of my home local, who used to be
the business agent of the local, knew me by the time the interview
came around. it took them 5 months to decide on the number of
apprentices that year, and i gave a call every ten days or so, asking
about when they were going to start testing.

they knew i wanted in, they knew i'd do what it took.
the interview lasted five minutes....

Q: why do you want to be an electrician?

A: i've decided this is what i want to do with my life's work,
and this is where i want to learn how to do it. if you won't
have me, i'll have to learn it and do it somewhere else, but
this is as good as it gets, from my point of view.

Q: well, that seems to cover it pretty well. thanks for coming in.
by the way, do you drink?

A: does beer count?

Q: no, beer doesn't count. thanks for coming in.

Do not wear a suit to the interview. I used to be local 503 which is in harriman also ( orange and rockland utilities) i went to the interview straight from work in dirty boots jeans and a t shirt, they loved it. I'm now local 320 out of Poughkeepsie. Dress decent, but remember what you are applying for.

It's funny how times have changed, back in 86 if you didn't wear a suit you might as well have skipped the interview beside you weren't getting in.

Yup, 30+ years and still going. 6 more years and I will collect that big fat pension.

Congrats brotherr happy for you .

being a local 3 member must of been preety cool having the opertunity to work on some

hudge projects and the pride and honour that comes with it .

since I've been going through the process of joining ibew, I guess you can say I caught

the union bug .

ive been studying how labor unions started , how the ibew started with Henry miller.

etc . ordered stickers and shirts online lol.

i watched a documentary on the freedom tower and it was amasing the craftsmanship and union pride that went into that building almost brought tears to my eyes.

when the towers got hit their were some ibew brothers that passed and they wrote their names on the highest point of the tower to honor their lost brothers.

it was a awsome documentary to watch really made me feel proud of this opertunity in front
of me.

ill be taking a paycut from 25ph to 12$ph and having to start all over again .

but it will be an honor to be able to say I'm ibew and part of the brotherhood.

I watched anouther doc on how the linesman ibew members in Cali , started to strike

In the 20's against the railroad company's for 8 hour days and weeknds and how the employers

would hire strike breakers with guns to try and break up the strikers but they stood strong ,
Many lost their life's but they achieved fair wage , weeknds,
safe wrkjng conditions , all things that some ppl take for granted .

I don't know Ibew.
But I have been on the other side of the desk interviewing prospective candidates.
A couple of simple pieces of advice.

Be on time.
Answer the questions you are asked. Not what you think you are asked. Keep it to the point and succinct. The interviewer will have time constraints.
Be candid. If you don't know the answer to a question, just say so.

Good luck!
