I recently had the same question, so I have your answer: For IC it's 0" for the fixture [410.66(A)(2)]. It can touch combustibles and/or insulation.

However, if you have old low-temp wire you need to keep the old wire 12" away from the can [410.67(B, C)].

Non-IC cans are 3" minimum from insulation [410.66(B)] and 1/2" from combustibles [410.66(A)(2)].

Also, be sure to leave the relamping label on the can and keep it masked off during texturing and painting (if using spray).
