Kentucky, to my knowledge, does not require the ICC exam.

I would be careful as to what tests you will or have taken. Pennsylvania passed a law in 2007 (see attachment) regarding statewide licensing of electricians. According to the Pennsylvania House Bill 1008 it will become effective April 5, 2008. (see last page)

They also state the requirements for journeyman, master and contractor.

If you already passed an exam, you may be grandfathered in, but don't count on it unless stated in the legislation.

I would also inquire at your local electrical inspectors office to see if they have any further info.

That bill actually died in committee last year.

GA passed a law requiring general contractors to be licensed by the state. it was supposed to take effect about a year and a half ago, but they've had so many problems its been pushed back to july of this year. anyway, i have the icc contractors license because two jurisdictions i work in require builders to have the icc license (i am a builder also). the state law said if you had this license you will be grandfathered, however, this proved not to be the case. the sec. of state's office said, and i quote, "the state attorney told us we had to put that in the law to avoid a lawsuit, but said there's nothing that requires us to actually do that (meaning grandfather your license)". anyway, my application was rejected because i have been in business less than 5 years. now they want me to take a test, but to take the test i have to show my bank accounts, co's from houses i built, and insurance; the kicker is that it all has to be in my personal name, because my company has been in business less than 5 years, nothing from that will be accepted. so basically it looks at though i'm completely screwed. my state representative is "currently working on this situation for (you). we didn't anticipate these kinds of things when we wrote the bill." --- what a surprise.

Yes, there's a big difference between a bill and a law. I'm wondering what the real objection to licensing is in PA? Seems like a no-brainer to have some sort of professional licensing when working with something as dangerous as electricity.

We support individual rights. With the excetion of Philly and Pittsburgh, PA is quite conservative.

Yes they do regardless of posts. If you do not have them on your resume, probably will not be considered in any area. Here in DC must be a Master, plus ICC Residential Electrical and Commercial Electrical Certifications are a must.

Is it difficult to get a license in Philly or Pitt because of the Union?

ICC is good in TX, MI, LA, AR, and a few midwestern states.

I just relocated from TX to NH and they do not recognize the ICC exams :(

** I just found out I passed the Master ICC exam in 2003 :)!!! Does me no good right now, since I have to be a journeyman for one year in NH, before taking their master electrician exam.

The reciprocity rules are very vague and you will probably have to test again in whatever state you go to. They are very regional, ie my NH license is good in NH, MA, and ME.

My apologies.

I wasn't able to find any info on the bill being killed in committee. I just went by the PDF I posted.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

By the way: Are they intending to resurrect that bill?

Howdy,

The ICC Exams are required in many states as a requirement to employment as an Electrical Inspector. In VA, to be an electrical inspector you are required to pass the ICC- E1 and E2 within your first year of employment ( but thats a local government requirement ). The state DHCD for VA requires both as well before they will state license you as an Electrical Inspector which is required by law in VA within 18 months of employment as an Electrical Inspector.

On the ICCSAFE.org website you can see a list of government agencies that accept the ICC for their state requirements as for Electrical Inspectors....but usually they have no effect on the individual license say for Journeyman or Master Electricians...thats a different board ( in VA it is the DPOR who governs that license requirement on tradesmen )

ICC is a great way to stay fine tuned.....I recommend the E1,E2 and E3 tests for everyone to keep sharp....testing is always good.
