It is my belief thru 210.8B and 422.5 that an ice maker condenser or Ice cream machine in a commercial restaurant (not kitchen area) does not need GFCI protection. The area is part of a drive thru, food prep is in separate room, no sink within 6ft.
I found this a little odd but wondered if perhaps I was missing something.

Who is able to use the ice and ice cream machine? If they are restricted to employees, then IMO no GFCI protection is required under the 2017 code. If customers have access to the machines, then I would consider them vending machines which do require GFCI's.

Does water flowing into the ice maker turn it into a "sink?" It does have a drain...
Hmmmm? A cup gets filled with ice but not sure if there is a plumbed drain or a just a tray you dump. I will find out.

You've got water flowing into a machine with valves, motors, solenoids, and other electrical parts. That raises the risk of malfunction and wet short circuits. I'd say a GFCI is worth consideration... code required or not!
Are these things built to double-insulated standards?
