I was wondering if anyone had any ideas other than a j-box, compression/cable gland and insulated lug for a connection between a #6 and #10 wire on a very long pv run. MC4's run between 8-14 gauge so I think that's out.

Wire nut? (outdoor type?) I don't know how to avoid the j-box and cable gland. Pretty much all NEC wiring methods require a box for splices. I was trained to use Buchanan splice caps but they are not actually rated for outdoors.

Are both wires PV wire? (i.e. would you not need a box to transition anyway?)

I do feel your frustration.

If the cable is rated for cable tray and he puts it in cable tray...
392.56 Cable Splices. Cable splices made and insulated by
approved methods shall be permitted to be located within a
cable tray, provided they are accessible. Splices shall be
permitted to project above the side rails where not subject
to physical damage.
